Day Two - The Dance

After the Anime Music Video contest, I made my way to the dance to check out the action. Since the AMVs took longer than expected, I missed out much of the dance. I took quite a few pics, but many of them were just too blurry to display, and these are the only photos that I could salvage.

053 Here's a nice shot of the dance floor. It's still pretty packed and more people are coming in from finishing the AMVs.

054 I managed to catch Chris Vance and some other guy doing some cool improvised "martial arts dancing". Chris did a cool drunken style and the other guy did some neat kicks.

055 More "martial arts dancing". The crowd's really eating it up!

056 I think eventually the martial arts had to be called off 'cause somebody thought it was dangerous. The dance still continued though as you can see.

057 Once again, here's Chris Vance, but without the wig. He really is a cool guy. He gave me a big one-armed bear hug while I was doodling outside of the dance room. Wotta guy! By the way, that's my finger that messed up the pic. I seem to have a problem with that.

Day Three - Sunday Morning

I woke up kinda late so I went to whatever panels were left and kinda wandered a bit. Things were winding down so there wasn't as much stuff left to do. But I still took a few photos.

058 Here, [insert name here] is dressed as Sesshoumaru from Inuyasha. I like the cool converted Cabbage Patch doll. I'm not sure who it's supposed to be though.

059 Here's [insert name here] playing a really cool Chocolate from Sorcerer Hunters. Man, this girl musta been cold just wearing the sports bra. Great costume though. She has an eye for detail.

060 Here's a better shot of [insert name here] from her earlier pic as Pochi from Animal Magnetism.

061 Haha! Here's the tiniest Sanosuke (from Rurouni Kenshin) that I've ever seen!

Day Three - Norio Shioyama's Character Design Panel

I got to meet Norio Shioyama, character designer for Votoms and Ronin Warriors. The following photos are from Norio Shioyama's character design panel. I wish I had caught the first part of his panel. Various circumstances made me late, but I managed to snap a few pics anyway. I managed to get right up to the stage and get lots of up-close shots of Shioyama drawing on the white board. I got to ask the final question during the Q&A session. I asked him what his favorite feature was to draw when designing a character. I explained that my favorite feature were the eyes because they evoked so much emotion. But Shioyama had another way. He explained that the mouth can also evoke a lot of emotion, and he explained this in the pictures that he drew. He's a really cool guy and he let me photograph him up close with the white board. I learned a lot from that panel.

062 This is about where I came in during the panel. I missed what was going on, but I had to take a pic of whatever it was that was still on the white board.

063 Here, he tries to answer my question. I usually start off by drawing eyes. He starts off with drawing the eyebrows!

064 Finished the eyebrows...

065 He sketches in the rest of the face.

066 Here's the finished face, but without the mouth drawn in. Here he explains that the mouth can also be a great indicator of a character's emotional state.

067 Without changing a single line except for the mouth a character can be happy...

068 ...angry...

069 ...or slightly confused!

070 Here's the final pic of the character, which appears to be the main character from Ronin Warriors. Shioyama says that he's one of his favorite characters to draw. Here, Shioyama is quickly autographing the white board at the end of the panel.

071 Here, he suddenly noticed that I was taking his picture.

072 Here, Shioyama was kind enough to let me get a better photograph. I screwed it up 'cause my damned finger is in the way again. I creatively cropped it in Photoshop.

A very gracious "thank you" to Mr. Shioyama who taught me a lot that day! Thanks for coming to Sakura Con! It was an honor to meet you and I hope you come back again as a guest! どうも ありがとう ございました!
