Day 2 - Saturday Night Cosplay, Part 2
|
Here's the last part of Cosplay. Cool stuff happened during the intermission. There was a quick retrospective
movie that actually showed clips from previous years' Cosplay events.
Here's a local voice acting school called
Team Dreamcatchers. They've
been coming to Sakura Con for the last few years and I hear they put on a great stage show. Sadly,
I somehow keep missing out on it due to clashing schedules. One of these days I'll get to watch.
Here, they're doing their dance routine to the opening sequence of an anime called The Melancholy
of Haruhi Suzumiya. They were totally synchronized with the anime sequence behind them.
Once they finished, they upped the ante and doubled the amount of dancers on stage and did the routine
again.
...And here's the end of the routine.
At this point, all of the cosplay sketches were done, and we were treated to an extra-special surprise!
Akitarou Daichi came on stage and showed us some cool sword moves. For those who don't know, he directed
such anime as Fruits Basket, Jubei-Chan, Kodomo no Omocha, and Akazukin Cha-Cha.
I really wanted to go to his panels and get his autograph but I missed out. A sad panda is me.
Then, all of a sudden, Japanese voice actress Kaori Nazuka came on stage as well and challenged Mr.
Daichi to a sword fight. For those who don't know, she has worked with Mr. Daichi on some of his anime.
She's played Ao in Grrl Power and Lala-Ru in Now and Then, Here and There. Currently
she's more known as the voice of Eureka in Eureka Seven. Again, kicking myself for missing out on
her panels and getting an autograph.
Both of them were pretty impressive in their sword play. This photo just doesn't do any justice
to the action.
Ms. Nazuka was pretty consistently defeating Mr. Daichi, but he'd cop out and press an invisible
"Reset" button and exclaim that her victories didn't count. This was the decisive victory with
a blade to the throat.
And then they were done. You really had to be there. It was just so awesome.
Finally, the cosplay judges announced their picks and the winners were brought on stage, officially
ending cosplay. I had a photo of the winners on stage but it turned out pretty bad. I really need
a new camera.

Day 2 - Saturday Night, After the Cosplay
|
Once Cosplay was over, I lingered around to get much better photos of the cosplayers. I was also
purposely sticking around so I could get good seats for the Hellsing Ultimate showing that would
be in this room immediately after, but I digress. On to the pictures.
In front, we have Kathy Harrison, sister of Dan, the vice con chairman. She's chatting it up with some
of the Cosplay winners.
Umm... I can't remember which sketch these cosplayers were in. They look great though.
Here're the cosplayers from the FFVII sketch, joined by an Advent Children Tifa.
Here're the cosplayers from the Fullmetal Alchemist sketch.
Here again is Michiru, the Japanese cosplayer who helped judge Cosplay, with her pick of
"Best Walk-On", these twin Cheshire Cats, Hikaru and Kaoru from Ouran High School Host Club.
Can't remember this staffer's name, but I've seen him before dressed as a Red Mage from Final Fantasy.
Here, he clearly is not a Red Mage. However, he says that he was wearing that white wig because
he had been playing around with fake blood during a karaoke performance and his hair was now red as a result.
If I remember correctly, this is that dude from Wolf's Rain. I think he's the only Wolf's
Rain cosplayer I saw all weekend. It's a shame because it's really not a bad anime. Incidentally,
I finally found all the remaining discs that I needed to finish my Wolf's Rain boxed set. I
wasn't about to re-buy the first three volumes again in that newer boxed set. Fortunately, most of
the discs were being clearanced out so I saved some cash. Oh yeah. Good job, Wolf's Rain cosplayer!
Here's Big Chris dressed as Guy from Naruto. At some point, he lost one of his giant eyebrows
on stage. He's trying to cover this up.
I got up on stage and snapped some of the Cosplay winners. By now, the ballroom was almost completely
cleared out so lots of photographers were getting on the stage to snap photos.
Here's the Final Fantasy VII cosplayers again. In front are that really cool Aerith cosplayer
I met in the Exhibitor's Hall, and April dressed as young Tifa from Final Fantasy VII: Last Order
or from that brief flashback from the original FFVII game. Everyone looks great!
